Copenhagen Workshops

CirCoFin conducted screenings to establish Circular Construction Hubs in the Capital Region of Denmark

In September, the Greater Copenhagen area organized their first workshop on the establishment of joint public Circular Construction Hubs (CCHs). The initiative, which brought together 25 Zealand municipalities, one region, four government agencies, and one university, saw the active involvement of CirCoFin through screenings aimed at assessing the municipalities’ level of maturity for setting up material stations.

Shared CCHs make it possible to plan logistics, ensure documentation of material content and quality, and increase demand — so that reuse becomes a realistic and attractive solution in the construction sector. Still, only 1% of materials from demolitions are currently reused in the Capital Region, even though large volumes, such as concrete and bricks, are perfectly suitable for this purpose.

The workshop emphasized that to fill this gap a data-sharing approach in collaboration with the Capital Region is needed. Thanks to CirCoFin’s experience in digital infrastructure, market insights, and knowledge collection, the municipalities will identify barriers and explore potential initial models for how CCHs might be developed and operated.

Keeping materials and buildings in use for as long as possible is essential to reduce environmental impact and preserve resources. CirCoFin is working with four Showcase Cities to help ensure that the material stations are both operational and economically viable, while also exploring potential interfaces with the private market. The initiative also aims to serve as a source of inspiration for other European regions, fostering a wider transition toward circular construction practices.

The CirCoFin showcase for the Greater Copenhagen area is managed by GATE21 in collaboration with Smith Innovation and Colcular. Read more here.
