Discussions from Lisbon: CirCoFin Gathers for Its Third General Assembly
The CirCoFin consortium came together in Lisbon on 23 and 24 April for the third General Assembly of the project. Local showcase partners Lisboa-ENOVA and GEBALIS welcomed all partners, who engaged in a series of meetings, presentations and hands-on sessions. As the project approaches its midterm, the discussions allowed partners to take stock of progress made and deepen exchanges across the consortium. As a closing moment, partners visited the materials bank hosted by a local company working on material reuse, ZIRCOM.
The first day of discussions opened with updates on project management and coordination, as well as the latest dissemination and communication progress. A keynote by sustainability and circularity strategist Marco Frazão Pedroso allowed partners to get a better insight into the current state of Portuguese regulation for circular construction practices, as well as how this connects with the latest developments from the Lisbon Circular Construction Hub. During the afternoon, a workshop facilitated by UnternehmerTUM invited partners to engage more directly with the project's key challenges.
The second day was centred on peer learning. A workshop facilitated by ICLEI Europe, Concular, DIN and BwB brought showcase partners together in an interactive format to surface shared challenges, emerging solutions and opportunities for near-term impact during the second half of the project.
The assembly concluded with a visit to ZIRCOM's Materials Bank, offering participants a tangible glimpse into what a functioning circular construction ecosystem can look like. ZIRCOM operates an extensive warehouse outside of Lisbon, storing reclaimed building elements, many of them sourced from historic buildings. The company is also developing digital tools to support material tracking and more efficient reuse systems, serving as a great example of the potential of innovation in material reuse.
These insights and discussions will feed into the next steps of the project, and serve as an inspiration for local CCH development within the CirCoFin partners, enabling cities to learn from one another and accelerate progress toward scalable circular construction solutions.
